Tampa Retina Care Staff and Expertise

RVAF’s Tampa team consists of skilled vitreoretinal surgeons who find and address all forms of retinal disease with both medical and surgical care for all conditions. The practice has helped the Tampa Bay region with retina care for decades. It has one of the finest clinical trial units in the United States to provide new treatment when conventional treatments will not suffice.

Conditions We Treat

Comprehensive care is given for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusions, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, eye floaters, and retinal detachment, among others, affecting the retina and macula.

Proper diagnoses, clear explanations, and appropriate treatments are provided to patients to stabilize or improve their vision, as feasible.

Advanced Scans And Tests

Every visit includes a complete dilated retinal examination and cutting-edge imaging for evaluation of the macula, optic nerve, vitreous, and peripheral retina to facilitate early identification and accurate treatment planning for complicated retinal disease. This technology-driven model is at the core of how RVAF individualizes Tampa care plans.

Treatments And Procedures

Treatment is tailored and evidence-based:

  • Intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF are employed for wet AMD, diabetic eye disease, and macular edema to address leakage and swelling.
  • Office-based laser treatment is required for some retinal tears and vascular or macular disease.
  • Vitreoretinal surgery is employed to correct retinal detachment, macular pucker, and macular hole, and vitrectomy for conditions such as vitreous hemorrhage. This surgery is performed by experienced surgeons who provide the best outcomes.

Retinal Detachment: Don’t Wait for Warning Signs

A retinal detachment is an emergency. Treatment early, particularly when the macula is not detached, provides the most opportunity to preserve vision. Severe warning signs are a sudden shadow or curtain passing through your vision, new or worse light flashes, and a sudden onset of more floaters.

These floaters may worsen over hours or days as the retina lifts away from the underlying tissue. Seek urgent care immediately if you see these signs to minimize the possibility of losing your vision.

What will you see When You Visit?

The majority of visits involve examining pupil size, taking photographs, and discussing the findings and next steps. Same-day procedures, such as injections or laser, may be performed when necessary to decrease risks and stabilize vision.

Patients are instructed on how to monitor at home, when to have follow-ups, and when to contact immediately if they notice flashes, floaters, or a curtain over their vision.

Coordinated, Patient-Centered Care

The Tampa staff is closely coordinated with optometrists, eye doctors, and family doctors. This is especially important for conditions like diabetes, where collaboration with diabetic retinopathy specialist in Tampa may be required. They ensure patients receive timely evaluations, clear treatment plans, and follow-ups. RVAF’s ability to perform clinical trials also makes qualified patients beneficiaries of new treatments when needed.

The Tampa location is conveniently accessible for West Tampa, South Tampa, and Hillsborough County patients requiring specialized retina care. An on-call physician can address emergency retinal conditions immediately.
